regenerative farming, permaculture and sustainable hospitality in Eumelia

By integrating the local agricultural production and by showcasing the cultural practices that surround the former, “Eumelia” of Homeodynamic Development is preserving local natural and cultural resources that characterize its offering. Abiding by the principles of biodynamic farming & permaculture for its agricultural production, and of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) for the operation of the accommodation facilities, “Eumelia” has limited its negative impact on the surrounding area. The use of eco-friendly materials, application of RES (geothermal and solar heating), and greywater reuse add to its resilience, by also lowering long-term costs and mitigating risks related to variable costs and seasonality.

Since 2009, Eumelia has been a pioneer in regenerative farming, permaculture and sustainable hospitality. The initial setup of needed infrastructure in owned land included owner living areas, and olive grove and vineyard irrigation and care. Landscape features were added gradually (e.g. a water pond) thus enriching agro-activities for the visitors. Accommodation facilities were built and outfitted with eco-friendly technology solutions. Marcom strategy engaged an international audience, with the creation of quality collateral and numerous Press Publications. Monitoring and feedback of the activities ensures the continuous enhancement of the visitor experience while staying true to the values of ecodynamics and sustainability.

Challenges for similar units relate to the presence of appropriate networks or grids and supportive services in the surrounding area. The initial investment for such is higher than a “traditional” unit of a farmstay with available accommodation of comparable capacity. Its design approach permits to Homeodynamic Development to access funding for SMEs related to greening and sustainable tourism. Access to markets and visitor acquisition for an alternative form of tourism is a main point to be addressed, though agrotourism has gained significant traction in the past decade. A targeted advertising and communication strategy has resulted to significant publicity for “Eumelia”.

Emelia’s approach as an agrotourism unit is highly replicable and transferable, with application to various geographies (mountainous regions, plains, coastal areas, arid environments, forested areas). By relying on the proximity to the location of production of food ingredients and raw materials, provision of accommodation, and inclusion of visitors to the process of farm work, agricultural production, animal care and environmental preservation, each agrotouristic unit can provide its own unique offer.  Pre-existing 1st sector SMEs/ producers can transit to the 3rd sector or cooperate with newly established enterprises to add value to their offer while increasing the productivity of their own resources.

Sustainable Tourism Development Toolkit

The institute has developed a toolkit that addresses several challenges faced by the tourism industry. Among the 6 thematic categories, one addresses Sustainable Tourism Development. The content of this section spans from the sustainable operation of an accommodation unit to sustainable destination management.  Offering access to 26 relevant studies, 8 manuals, 6 videos and 2 articles, INSETE aims to raise awareness and understanding of E-S-G issues, while providing accommodation units with tools to change their operation and align with EU sustainability targets.

Since 2013, INSETE has focused on key aspects of sustainable development through its research and educational work. Recognizing the growing importance of sustainability due to contemporary environmental challenges, changes in the legislative framework, the evolution of travel behavior after the pandemic, and the needs of local communities, INSETE has gathered essential information, studies, tools, and educational videos to support the transformation of Greek tourism.
The creation, classification and provision of these materials in a comprehensive toolkit creates an attractive learning opportunity for professionals of the field.

The identification of the challenges that are relevant for the stakeholders of the sectors requires the establishment of a methodology of research and significant experience. The Institute should know how to pinpoint the needs of the sector to be also able to provide valuable insights. This is especially relevant when quality operation and innovation heavily rely on knowledge of relevant E-S-G issues to either provide additional value to the touristic product or alter the impact of the sector and diminish externalities.

As risks associated with the tourism industry are becoming increasingly perplex (eg.Pandemic, climate change) the Institute should evaluate the impact of a microevent on the industry and gather and provide relevant knowledge to address issues and knowledge gaps, that could potentially harm sectoral stakeholders or even the sector as a whole.

The tools provided inscribe a vision for Greek tourism to be accomplished, while integrating the latest developments in the relevant policy at EU level. The key strategic goals of promoting Greece’s tourism sector competitiveness, while turning towards sustainability, are supported by the tools provided by the Institute. While these are free and openly available, other organisations can replicate the practice of creating informative and educational material to support change in their sector/sub-sector of economic activity.

Plastic waste management practices of Creta Maris

The plastic waste management practices of Creta Maris are noteworthy. A unit-wide waste collection system is in place, sorting plastics in special bins at their source point. Once collected, outgoing plastics are weighed for waste production monitoring at the hotel’s warehouse before being sent for recycling. Creta Maris is committed to tackling food waste too. A multi-pronged approach is adopted to reduce wasted food, by closely monitoring food waste mass, serving sizes were adjusted, and better food presentation strategies were implemented. Additionally, the staff was trained on food waste reduction, while guests and employees were informed of these efforts.

Since 2013, Creta Maris Resort has been successfully implementing circular economy methods to become more environmentally sustainable. The unit’s management has developed “a personalised guide to building and implementing Sustainable Governance with a ‘think global ‘- ‘act local ‘mindset and a 2030 horizon”. This model is comprised by 4 sections (Sustainable committee – Strategic Priorities – Sustainable Procurement – Communication of Achievements) which guide individual actions that include policy alignment, practice adoption, responsible sourcing and disseminating the positive impact.

Challenges are related to change management and the ROI of sustainable investment. As there is a specific window of possible implementation for intervention in the premises of the resort (off-season), careful planning is needed. The initial investment needs to be capitalised in the very short term, by transferring the added value of the environmentally sensitive practices first to the brand and then to the actual experience of guests. A wider challenge is the perceived added value of environmentally sustainable practices for all-inclusive resorts by their guests, as virtue-signalling alone cannot drive demand up, but actual positive experiences.

The sustainable development strategy implemented by Creta Maris can be adapted to specificities of other touristic units, allowing them to manage their energy use, waste, food stuffs procurement and overall environmental footprint of their operation in an environmentally responsible manner. Units that adopt similar strategies benefit both their brand, which incorporates environmental responsibility values, and the experience offered to visitors.
