Best Practice

Since its renovation and opening of the agrotourism facility, the owners understood the importance of networking, peer learning, and practice exchange. They supported and participated in events by youth associations and women associations,  while also sponsoring events in their community that bring together locals with visitors for a genuine local experience. They strive to grow their network by traveling abroad to obtain new knowledge and establish relationships. They have earned awards for their social responsibility and sustainability performance. The agrotourism facility’s environmental performance, provided a good opportunity for an application for a green certificate. The SME has applied for the Green Key certification and has been approved. The certification will ensure that the strong environmental policy that the SME has already in place is recognised and it is certified. The certification provides a positive image for its guests and future clients as well as for the local community.

Organization

Charalambos Holiday Cottage

A family-run agrotourism accommodation, situated in a small village called Kalavasos, in the Larnaca region. The house, originally constructed in around 1890, is stone built with renovation works completed in 2011 so that the house maintains its original character. The house comprises 5 independent and luxurious self-catering apartments each with an ensuite bathroom (toiletries), a power shower, a kitchen with all utensils, a fridge, a gas stove, air conditioning, and TV with satellite channels. Each room is traditionally decorated and contains a custom-made iron bed and sitting area.

Impact

The guests appreciate the efforts to provide a local experience. The approach to include local artists in the touristic experience of our visitors, has a socioeconomic impact beyond Kalavasos village. The pieces of art, and traditional products, foster economic empowerment, promote cultural diversity, and create avenues for sustainable livelihoods. By showcasing the talents and contributions of local artists and women, they enhance the tourists’ authentic and unique experience. Lastly, maintaining the traditional character of buildings contributes to the historical legacy of the village.

Sustainability

These practices can maintain a very high level of sustainability in the future since there is a strong connection with the local community and a high level of environmental awareness. The combination of utilising local agricultural production promotes the sustainability of the services and ensures that social and environmental factors are met by these synergies.
