Best Practice

During the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, ODYSWAY swiftly adapted its strategy to cater to the evolving needs of travelers, while also embracing sustainability as a core principle. With a strategic shift towards local tourism, particularly in France and across Europe, ODYSWAY capitalized on accessible transportation via train routes to facilitate travel during a time of closed borders and restricted mobility.  Throughout the period from March to June 2020, ODYSWAY proactively crafted 15 immersive tours within National Parks and Natural Reserves (PN and PNR), focusing on local exploration and supporting regional economies. These new experiences not only showcased the breathtaking beauty of these natural landscapes but also fostered meaningful connections between travelers and the passionate locals residing within them. This shift led to an exclusive partnership with the federation of French natural parks (PNR).

Organization

ODYSWAY

Odysway is a travel tech specialized in immersive trips, for individuals and small groups. Odysway creates 5 to 15 days immersions in over 50 countries, focusing on developing experiences with local families, communities, and NGOs.

Impact

The vision balances local offerings with long-distance trips, promoting the motto: “travel less but travel better.” Encouraging numerous local “micro-adventures” each year, the company advocates exploring nearby destinations via train, local transportation, or bicycles, highlighting often-overlooked domestic beauty and diversity. International journeys are promoted in a distinctive manner, emphasizing stays with locals, choosing smaller accommodations, and immersing in local culture through train travel and extended community interactions. This approach supports responsible travel.

Sustainability

Acknowledging that long-distance travel will continue, travel agencies must inform travelers about its impact to ensure viable sustainability. Instead of focusing on the small percentage who already travel locally, targeting those who haven’t considered changing their habits is more effective. This approach encourages travelers to use flights less frequently, travel differently locally with reduced local transportation, and consider shorter trips within their own country. By promoting these changes, more sustainable travel behaviors are fostered, reducing the overall environmental impact.
