Best Practice

Sustainability is anchored as one of the five goals in the Rhineland-Palatinate Tourism Strategy 2025. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture (MWVLW), together with the partners of the Rhineland-Palatinate Tourism Strategy, has developed the expert concept and guidelines for sustainable tourism development in Rhineland-Palatinate in order to strategically and in a structured manner dedicate itself to sustainable, responsible tourism development.

The aim was to initiate a strategic and operational change process towards sustainable tourism development and to implement it on the basis of a concept and guidelines.

Organization

Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture Rhineland-Palatinate

The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of Rhineland-Palatinate covers a broad spectrum. Over 50 departments in seven divisions organise economic and structural policy, cross-border cooperation, innovation promotion, viticulture, wine monitoring, state horticultural shows, agriculture, rural development, road construction and transport infrastructure or fundamental issues of mobility. Tourism is assigned to the economic policy department and comprises the areas of “tourism policy / tourism marketing” and “tourism infrastructure / tourism industry” in two units

Impact

As a key pillar of resilience, sustainability is at the centre of the concept and strategy development. In the sense of a holistic approach, it was related to the other pillars of resilient tourism with its interactions, synergies and potential points of conflict. All elements of professional tourism management were considered in their entirety and with their interrelationships, and recommendations were harmonised accordingly. The aim was to enable tourism stakeholders to successfully organise innovation, adaptation and change processes towards sustainability in a practice-oriented manner.

Sustainability

This strategy sets the course for the future. The five guidelines serve as guard rails and provide strategic direction. Because only together – with the tourism destinations and tourism service providers – can the challenges be met and a long-term and flexible approach to crises be adopted. The various tourism stakeholders in Rhineland-Palatinate are to be sensitised and motivated to make a contribution to sustainable tourism development.
